FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE CHOICE OF CAB GLASS YOU CHOOSE

Updated: Dec 13, 2021

Some factors are crucial when deciding between aftermarket tempered or laminated cab glass. Here are some of these factors:

Safety Factor

Tempered cab glass was designed to absorb energy from an object striking it by shattering it into thousands of pieces with relatively little mass. The smaller the mass of the glass fragments, the less potential they have for injury to individuals in a vehicle or bystanders at a collision scene. Laminated cab glass is engineered to stay in one piece when shattered, minimizing potential injuries by keeping projectiles inside the vehicle cabin rather than sending them flying toward the occupants or people outside. For this reason, tempered glass is considered safer, while laminated cab glass is preferred when safety is not a factor.

Cost Factor

Laminated cab glass costs about 20% more than tempered cab glass and about half the cost of bulletproof cab glass. To determine which type of glass best fits within budget parameters, vehicles need to be weighed against the cost for an informed decision to be made. Some consumers may prioritize low-cost over other factors, such as safety or ease of installation, whereas others will pay extra for security features that provide peace of mind. Either way, it is important to consult with vehicle owners before making a purchase decision.

Ease of Installation

Tempered glass requires protection from penetration because the glass shards are sharper on the exterior than on the interior. Installation of a guard rail makes installing tempered cab glass because it prevents the broken glass from falling on the ground, contaminating work areas, and making cleanup difficult. It also keeps bystanders safely behind containment barriers rather than standing directly below where broken glass may fall.

Laminated cab glass can be installed without special equipment or protection, which is more cost-effective for installation companies that do not specialize in auto glass repair. Furthermore, windshields with laminated cab glass are appropriate for replacement if damaged by rocks kicked up while driving off-road or through gravel parking lots. Bullets fired at vehicle windows are unlikely to penetrate laminated glass due to its interlayer bonding, but safety still needs to be considered.

Cab Glass Function

Tempered cab glass is commonly used in commercial and public vehicles because it is less likely to shatter into sharp pieces on impact. Laminated cab glass is the preferred choice for high-end vehicles and those more prone to damage, such as sports cars.

Vehicle Weight

The heavier the vehicle, the more important it becomes to consider safety features such as tempered or laminated cab glass. In some cases, the weight of a vehicle may be too much for the tempered glass to handle in the event of an accident. For this reason, laminated cab glass should be installed in heavier vehicles. While it is more expensive than tempered glass, the added security may be worth the investment.

It is important to consider the factors above when choosing between aftermarket tempered or laminated cab glass to assist in making an informed decision. Ultimately, the decision should be made based on what best suits the needs of the individual and the vehicle.
